Auckland City FC have officially begun their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 campaign, facing European heavyweights Bayern Munich at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, the home of MLS side FC Cincinnati.
The match captured global attention as the Oceania champions stepped onto the pitch in a true David vs Goliath encounter. While the scoreboard finished 10-0 in favour of the Bundesliga giants, Auckland City showed grit and composure throughout the 90 minutes in what will be remembered as a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many of the players.
Bayern, fielding a full-strength side, opened the scoring through Kingsley Coman in just the sixth minute. They added nine more before the final whistle, but one notable name was absent from the scoresheet. England captain Harry Kane, who was substituted after 60 minutes without finding the net.
Despite the result, the spirit and sportsmanship displayed by Auckland City FC were widely praised. Competing on the world stage against one of football’s most iconic clubs is a milestone that many players can only dream of and one that will live long in the memories of the team and their supporters.
One of the most exciting aspects of the new Club World Cup format is that Auckland City’s journey is far from over. They’ll next face Portuguese giants Benfica on Saturday morning at 4:00am (NZT), followed by a clash with South American powerhouse Boca Juniors on Wednesday, 25 June at 7:00am (NZT).
