What is Adapted Football?

Adapted Football is a form of “the beautiful game” designed to be inclusive and accessible for participants with physical or intellectual challenges. Programs are delivered by clubs committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability or experience, has the chance to enjoy and benefit from playing Football.

Led by experienced and supportive coaches, Adapted Football programs are tailored to create a safe, welcoming, and fun environment that meets the unique needs of each participant. Sessions typically run at least once a week, depending on the club, either on a weekday afternoon or over the weekend, and program blocks tend to follow the school term calendar.

Adapted Football is more than just Football – it encompasses connection, confidence, and community.

Adapted Football is designed to create opportunities for young people with varying abilities to play football and enjoy the benefits of the game.

Adapted Football began in South Auckland at Papatoetoe United in 2018. In 2023, Eastern Suburbs AFC launched their own Adapted Football Hub.

The Halberg Foundation have provided valuable support in evolving this programme. The Halberg Foundation aims to enhance the lives of physically disabled New Zealanders through sport and recreation.
