Northern Region Football reports strong growth in 2023


NRF’s Annual Report 2023 was released at our Annual General Meeting with a story of stand out growth for football in Auckland and Northland – some key numbers included: 

  • 37,815 registered senior, youth and junior players, up from 34,626 in 2022 
  • 16,000 games played by 1,800 teams 
  • 247 match officials, up from 233 in 2022, including 12 more women referees  
  • More than 800 coaches attended an NRF course 

“Our game was already growing before the tournament, and we know this has continued into 2024 - NRF’s focus has been on enabling that growth, from supporting our clubs to deliver for their new members, to working with our Councils to provide increased access to quality facilities,” said NRF CEO Laura Menzies and Chair Gina Mills. 

The Annual Report summarises 2023’s activity against our outcomes of Thriving Club Communities, Quality Competitions and Equity of Access, as well as sharing the audited financials for the year and is available on our website.  

Former Birkenhead United president David Williams has been voted onto Northern Region Football’s Board at the Annual General Meeting on Monday night. 

 

A member of United for 20 years, David recently stepped down from serving as President for four years, having overseen significant ground improvements with Shepherds Park serving as Italy’s training base at FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, and a focus on promoting girls and women’s football and creating connections with the community. 

Alvin Cheung stepped down from the NRF Board having served four years as an elected member

“Alvin has made a significant contribution in his time with NRF, and the Board thanks him wholeheartedly for his commitment and perspective, and wishes him well for the future,” said NRF Chair Gina Mills.  

Outgoing Chair Andrea Nelson was also recognised for her contribution to football leadership at the AGM.
