Stronger Foundations: Drury United FC Strengthens Off the Pitch

At any community football club, most people see only what happens on a Saturday morning. Players taking the field, coaches encouraging from the sidelines, volunteers running the canteen and families cheering from the touchline. What often goes unnoticed is the work happening behind the scenes.

For Drury United FC, that behind-the-scenes work has recently taken a significant step forward after becoming Northern Region Football's 12th club to achieve accreditation through the New Zealand Football Xero ‘Together Stronger’ Club Support Programme.

After seeing other clubs complete the programme, Drury United decided to see what it could offer. What they discovered was an opportunity to take a fresh look at the way the club operated.

"We quickly realised many of our policies and documents were outdated and needed reviewing," the club said. "It took time and commitment, but looking back it was worthwhile and has left the club in a much stronger position."

For a volunteer-run club, documenting processes can often fall behind the day-to-day demands of running football. The accreditation challenged the committee to capture the knowledge that had previously lived with individuals, creating systems that future volunteers can confidently build upon.

"We've always prided ourselves on being family-oriented and welcoming, and now we know our governance, policies and processes support those values."

Perhaps the biggest surprise wasn't discovering what needed improving—but recognising how much the club was already doing well.

"What initially felt like a daunting task became a really valuable opportunity to review how we operate. It also highlighted that we were already doing many things well; we just hadn't documented them properly."

That stronger governance now gives the club confidence to focus on what's next.

Grant funding remains a key priority, helping the club continue providing opportunities for its growing community, while recruiting and developing coaches is firmly at the top of the agenda.

"Coaches, coaches and more coaches! Investing in our coaches means investing in our players and the future of our club."

As a reward for completing the programme, Drury United selected two equipment packs provided by New Zealand Football. An easy decision for a club that knows there's always a need for more footballs.

Looking back, the club has one clear message for others considering the programme.

"It does take some work, especially if your documents haven't been updated for a while, but it's worth every minute. You'll finish the process with a much better understanding of your club, stronger governance and resources that will benefit the club well into the future."
